Grading Policy
Grades will comprise of, but not be limited to, assignments, practice cards, quizzes/tests, daily participation, concert attendance, etc. Categories are weighted and points are given to each type of assignment. Percentages apply to high school only. Points are broken down as follows:
40% Participation - Points per activity (class, rehearsal, etc.)
This is a grade which results from the daily responsibilities that include coming to class prepared with your instrument, folder, method books, music and a pencil. Students must be attentive, working, with all materials, and actively seeking to improve. This grade also reflects the student’s behavior and attitude. It also includes promptness and participation at all extra rehearsals and performances..
40% Performance
Concert Performance 200 points each
Festival Performance 300 points each
20% Assignments
Assignments include test, quizzes, workbooks, worksheets, etc. Points will vary.
*Students participating in another major ensemble (i.e. full orchestra, marching band, etc) as a subgroup of the original class will be accountable for all grades earned from that ensemble. Such grades will be reflected in the primary ensemble (i.e. band, orchestra, choir).

Grading Performance Attendance
Band, orchestra, and choir are ensembles that are part of a group of performing arts. It is essential that our ensembles perform public concerts. All concert performances are MANDATORY. Concerts are the culmination of the hard work we have done during in-class rehearsal and at-home practice and are the opportunity to show the community what we have accomplished. Because each ensemble is a team that relies on all of its musicians, it is extremely important that all students participate in each performance. Failure to participate in a concert does not just disappoint the audience and director, but it also alienates other members of the ensemble who must “pick up the slack” left by irresponsible students. An unexcused absence from a performance will result in the marking period grade being lowered by two letter grades! A schedule is provided to you – PLAN AHEAD!
Occasionally you may have another school-related event that conflicts with a performance. Please let your director know immediately if a conflict should arise so that it can be addressed. DO NOT wait until the week or day of the performance. This is not the way to develop a good working relationship! Little league practices and games, babysitting, your birthday, and “I couldn’t get a ride” are all examples of unexcused absences.
Excused absences include extreme illness, hospitalization, or a death in the family. If any of these are the case, please contact the director immediately and submit a written excuse from the parent to the director when you return to school. In the case of an excused absence, a make-up assignment will be given and must be completed by the date specified by your director. Unexcused absences cannot be made up.
A student who is absent the day of the concert, but is feeling better by the end of the day must contact the director for permission to participate in the concert that evening. If the student fails to do so and is found to have participated in another activity, the student will receive a “0” for the concert grade.

Grading Rehearsal Attendance
Attendance is essential at ALL extra rehearsals! After school sectionals, evening rehearsals, etc. will be kept to a minimum. If a student has a conflict and cannot attend, the director must be notified two weeks BEFORE the scheduled rehearsal. The director must receive a note signed and dated from the parent explaining the reason for the absence. Please include a phone number or email for contact information. Non-emergency doctor/dentist visits are not acceptable excuse as the music calendar is provided well enough in advance to adjust schedules. Notification of a non-emergency absence that is delivered just a few days before a rehearsal is not likely to result in being excused. An unexcused absence from a rehearsal will result in the marking period grade being lowered by one letter grade. Unexcused absences to extra rehearsals cannot be made up.
Athletics Schedule Conflict Policy
In the event of a sporting conflict with a sponsored team of the South Haven Public Schools the following priorities are in place as per the coaches, athletic director, and administration in South Haven.
- Music rehearsal/Athletic practice = Music rehearsal
- Music rehearsal/Athletic contest = Athletic contest
- Music Performance/Athletic practice = Music Performance
- Music Performance/Athletic contest = Contact Director
